Not that long ago, fiberglass pools themselves were new and cutting-edge products. First, they started popping up in backyards across New England. Over time, homeowners began to realize they were sleek, long-lasting, and low maintenance. Now, many companies (like ours) install more fiberglass pools than traditional gunite or concrete models.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fiberglass pools didn\u2019t always look just like they do now, though. In the years since they were first released, the best have gotten bigger, offered more depth options, and changed shape. We\u2019ve seen lots of new colors and surface finishes, and they\u2019ve been treated with gel coating for maximum longevity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Most of those early innovations came a couple of decades ago. It would be fair to say that the pools themselves don\u2019t change a great deal from year-to-year anymore. That\u2019s understandable; the pools need to be safe, durable, and popular so there isn\u2019t a lot of incentive for manufacturers to change what was already working.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even so, this is the part of the year where we start to look ahead. We don\u2019t know yet whether the companies we work with will release any new models in the coming months, but below are some thoughts about the trends that are driving this industry forward with every new season.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are Always New Fiberglass Pool Companies to Choose From<\/b><\/p>\n

For us, this represents something of a mixed bag. On the one hand, we only work with established fiberglass manufacturers who have proven they can meet high standards for quality and consistency. As a matter of fact, our biggest supplier is well known for producing performance components for high-end racing yachts. If they come out with the new pool, we can be sure it\u2019s going to be one of the best on the market.<\/span><\/p>\n

That means we are very, very cautious about trying new pool manufacturers. Still, we are glad they are around. After all, competition leads to innovation. If they keep making new types of pools then that can only be good for the industry as a whole.<\/span><\/p>\n

As a quick side note, that counts for us, as well. While we think our 20+ year track record of positive reviews and referrals sets us apart from other fiberglass pool installers in our area, we know we are constantly being pushed by other hardscaping companies. The competition keeps us from getting too comfortable.<\/span><\/p>\n

Most New Fiberglass Pools Aren\u2019t That New\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Typically, when we see a new fiberglass pool model being released it isn\u2019t because something big has changed. It\u2019s just that market research has pointed to a need for different shape, size, or color. In rare cases the fiberglass itself might be reformulated to make it more resistant to scratches and stains.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you were hoping for something bold and innovative that might feel like a disappointment, but we don\u2019t see it that way. Consistency in the fiberglass pool business means that homeowners are getting what they want. The companies that manufacture these products don\u2019t have to change their approach because they know their customers are satisfied and recommending pools to their friends.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are Some Improvements at the Margins<\/b><\/p>\n

While fiberglass pools haven\u2019t changed much in recent years, in terms of the materials they are made from, there have been some shifts in trends in the way they are used. For instance, we are seeing more and more models with built-in tanning ledges, along with pre-molded features like benches and steps. Some are offering safety ledges, ergonomic seating, and specialty models like plunge pools.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the more functional side, we are also seeing pools with better automated cleaning systems, more efficient pumps, and optional LED lighting packages. These can give you clearer water and quieter evenings, which increase enjoyment without forcing manufacturers to reinvent the wheel.<\/span><\/p>\n

These additions aren\u2019t exactly cosmetic, but they aren\u2019t big departures from existing popular designs, either.<\/span><\/p>\n

Everything Around Your Pool is Getting Better<\/b><\/p>\n

Despite all I\u2019ve written so far, I have to admit that it sometimes <\/span>feels<\/span><\/i> as if fiberglass pools are getting better all the time. But when I think about it, it\u2019s because everything around there is improving.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because I head up a patio renovation and fiberglass pool installation team, I get to see new products and trends faster than most. The quality shift in outdoor lighting, pavers, seating, and retaining walls (to name a few examples) over the last decade has been incredible. Fiberglass pools were already great \u2013 now other patio components are catching up.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even though the pool you could buy today might be very similar to the one you would have gotten ten years ago, your patio as a whole will feel better and last longer. Plus, fiberglass pools themselves are a huge improvement over the old concrete models we used to put in the ground.<\/span><\/p>\n

How Fiberglass Pools Might Improve in the Future<\/b><\/p>\n

Although my work as a fiberglass pool installer gives me a close-up look at these products, I don\u2019t have any special insights into the future. If I had to make some guesses about what might come out in the next few years, though, I would predict we will see:<\/span><\/p>\n
