Maybe that’s because people tend to associate “progress” with tech. They line up for the newest iPhone, check out the features on the latest electric cars, and wonder about future software releases. At the same time, they tend to assume that outdoor features never change.

There is some truth in that idea, of course. Trees and grass are largely the same as they have ever been, and most decks and sheds don’t have a futuristic style about them. And yet, there are some exciting things happening with patio design plans. Some of the changes relate to new materials (i.e., a kind of technology). Others just have to do with styles, trends, and even new ways of thinking about aesthetics.

To help you appreciate some of the cool things happening in our business – and open up your mind to some possibilities that might not have occurred to you – I want to use today’s post to bring you up to speed. Here are a handful of things you could incorporate into your patio or property that might not have been available (or at least popular) just a decade ago…

Pavers That Are Nearly Stain-Proof

You don’t only want a patio that looks great; you want to be able to step outside and enjoy it. But while you are having a good time, it’s virtually certain that something is going to spill.

It used to be that getting things like wine or burger grease out of a paver was virtually impossible. But now we have pieces that have been cured in a way that makes them highly resistant to marks or blemishes. That means you can treat your space like an at-home resort, rather than a museum that has to be kept perfectly clean.

Although these upgrades are more about convenience than cost, it’s worth noting that stain-resistant pavers can save you money over time. After all, you won’t have to replace them to keep the brand-new look like you would in the past.

More Patio Design Plan Sizes and Color Choices

One of the reasons homeowners don’t think about “new” trends in patio design planning has to do with the fact that nearly all landscaping work used to look the same. Pools, pavers, and even decks tended to fall within the same hues and themes.

Recently, we’ve been able to offer more choices. We’re seeing pavement done in charcoal tones and ruby reds. There are surfaces that have a smooth and wet look, even when they are dry. We are even seeing pavers and stone work that are made to look like wood grain.

New colors and textures aren’t for everyone, but they open up the world of patio design into new styles and frontiers.

Futuristic Fiberglass Pools

Although I have written quite a bit about fiberglass pools lately, it would be hard to overstate how much of an impact they are having on patio design plans. They look and feel different than traditional concrete pools did, giving your entire outdoor space a new look and sleeker feel.

As with stain-resistant pavers, fiberglass pools are a more durable option than gunite swimming pools were. They don’t wear down in the same way, don’t collect algae, and allow for both salt and fresh water. Plus, they can be integrated into spaces more easily, both because they are manufactured differently and because they require fewer cleaning agents.

All of these advantages combine to make them feel like a more futuristic version of a classic patio upgrade. I suppose that’s only appropriate given they are literally made from space-age materials. If you haven’t yet seen a new fiberglass pool for yourself, you should check one out before zeroing in on a patio design.

A New Perspective on Patio Design Plans

As exciting as stain-resistant pavers, vivid colors, and sleek fiberglass pools are, I think the biggest move forward in our industry has to do with perspectives and expectations. Homeowners are just thinking differently than they were in the past.

Some of that shift has probably been driven ahead by new ideas and fresh inspirations in patio design planning. But honestly, I think a lot of the transformation came from the Covid pandemic. Once the option of going away on vacation was removed, more and more people came to realize that there were other possibilities on their own property. The backyard shed could be turned into an office, for example, or an empty patch of grass could hold a peaceful waterfall.

What could you do with your outdoor space? How would you feel differently about your backyard if you had a bigger wooden deck, a relaxing pool, or a gorgeous pergola to enjoy?

Want to Create the Perfect Patio Design Plan for Your Home?

Building the ideal outdoor space for your property isn’t just about budgets, materials, or timelines. Instead, the best starting point is your home and lifestyle. The more we know about the way you want to use your backyard, the better job we can do at creating a plan that delivers.

In some cases, that might mean incorporating the elements I’ve outlined in this post. In other situations, it could involve features we haven’t even touched on here.

The first step toward creating your perfect patio design is having a one-to-one consultation at your property.
