A lot of success in life \u2013 and especially in the new patio design business \u2013 boils down to asking the right questions. Even though there are always hiccups on every job (more on this in a moment), you can set yourself up for success or failure by making an effort to get good answers.<\/span><\/p>\n

There is a simple logic to this truth. Your patio contractor might be an expert in pool installation or designing outdoor kitchens. However, what they can never know at the start of a project is what you want. That\u2019s because it\u2019s so dependent on your style, preferences, and vision for the future. The longer I work in this business, the more questions I tend to ask. I try not to assume anything. I take extra notes. I follow up even when the answers seem obvious to me. As a result, I get to know my customers better than I used to, which makes it easier for me to deliver on their dreams and ideas.<\/span><\/p>\n

Strange as it might sound, I think the major mistakes I\u2019ve made in my career have been the best teachers. There were a few errors that were so big that I\u2019m always on the lookout for them now. I simply wouldn\u2019t let myself make them again.<\/span><\/p>\n

Everyone is new at some point, and I\u2019m not against giving people their start in the hardscaping business. But the time to learn is when you\u2019re part of an experienced team, not when a homeowner has put all of their time and money in your care.<\/span><\/p>\n
